Reflections...
Communication has always been one of my strengths. I have an outgoing personality so it makes it easy for me to establish rapport quickly with patients. I am able to read non-verbal cues, listen and ask appropriate questions. When speaking to patients, I make an effort to avoid PT jargon and technical terms but still attempt to educate the patient using analogies and terms they can understand. When dealing with patients who are hard of hearing I try to increase my volume and use more demonstration, tactile cues and shorter commands. Speaking louder has been a challenge for me and is an area I continue to work on. When dealing with patients who have visual challenges, I use more tactile and verbal cues. I treat patients and staff with respect and dignity, compassion and concern. I have also found that a little humor goes a long way. I am not afraid to ask clarifying questions or to ask for help if I am unsure if I am using a proper technique or progression of an intervention. There is always room for improvement so I continue to seek feedback from peers and supervisors.
Below are some comments made by my CI from the CPI assessment at the end of my first clinical rotation.
