Reflections...
Every patient we deal with will be different in one way or another. It could be age, gender, race, cognitive ability, socioeconomic class, religion or culture. Regardless of what they may be, in order to be effective as clinicians, we must be sensitive to these differences. We studied cultural diversity and sensitivity in PTA Professional Issues 1. Each group was assigned a culture and had to create a power point presentation for our classmates. My group was assigned the Islamic culture. I learned a lot about how the role of women and the family structure in general is different than in the US. Being aware of different cultures can be crucial to providing sensitive and appropriate care to a patient. If your patient knows you care enough to learn about their culture and take those differences into account when providing treatment, it can help promote a trusting and cooperative relationship. This, in turn, can make the therapeutic relationship more productive, increasing the likelihood of successful therapeutic outcomes. Below it the powerpoint presentation my group created.
